Travel Info Also, how do you spell the abbreviated term? "Mo'Bay" or "Mo Bay" ? Travel Tips No it is a pass time in Jamaican dialect. Use of Mo bay is Universal in Jamaica,if you were talking, and used it,and some one said were is it,they would be look at, as ET's,only to be corrected that the place in topic is in fact Montego Bay. Montego bay as it is known was affected by shortening through every day conversing/slang which soon move over into Media outlets, the history of how the shortened version came about is not documented ,but some were a long the line Montegonians, instead of saying Montego bay,Used Mo bay instead, as it was short spicy and every one new what City you were referring to. Soon ads and even other means of documentation catch on. The same can be said a bout, Ochi,as locals pronounce it as Ochee, which is another example of local creativity or slang. Source(s): Exp. Brief history; Montego Bay, St. James: Has two possible origins. One has it named for the fact that the Spanish slaughtered many hogs there and loaded lard in jars to ship to Columbia. The Spanish word for lard is "mantega." The other has it named after Montego de Salamanca, an early Spanish colonizer. source;http://www.jamaica-gleaner.com/pages/his...
