I need some info before booking a Jamaican honeymoon!? |
Travel Info I am considering going to Ocho Rios, but I guess my main concern is how depressing the disparity of wealth is there. I guess I should be used to it in the US, but it just sucks...especially on your honeymoon. Does anyone have any advice on Jamaica, or any other places that have great snorkeling and great weather? Travel Tips Jamaica is beautiful and honestly, the price is right. It is a great place to go for your honeymoon. I've stayed in Ocho Rios, Montego Bay, and Negril. For a single person, I wouldn't recommend Ocho (less night life), but for couple it should be great depending on the resort. The disparity of wealth isn't much of an issue if you are staying on an all inclusive resort (which I recommend) or at a higher end resort. You don't generally leave it unless the food isn't up to par or if you're on a hotel/travel agency run excursion. Outside of the resorts, there is a lot of aggressive selling, but unlike some "vacation spots" it is generally by adults with touristy goods and not children (unlike, for example, some places in Mexico) which makes a difference. I don't have any other places to recommend because I absolutely love Jamaica. The place and the people are wonderful, and (much like in the States) the poverty, for better or worst, is mostly kept at a distance from those with the money to avoid it. Others Jamaica is a beautiful island and is very big for honeymoons because of all the "couples only" type resorts. But you will see poverty. It is depressing to see, but it also means the people there, especially the staff at your resort, will cater to your every whim in an attempt to sell you something, get a tip or keep their job. It boils down to what you want on your honeymoon and your tolerance level. If you are happy to stay on the resort grounds you'll be fine, but it if you want to explore the island you are traveling to and really feel the poverty will be an issue, you'll want to consider other options. The Caymans, Virgin Islands and St Kitts/Nevis are some beautiful islands where poverty is not as evident as it is in Jamaica. Done a lot of traveling in the Caribbean these 2 ladies said it all!!!!!!!!! have fun Firstly, congrats on your engagement! Jamaica is a wonderful choice for a Honeymoon and it being the 2nd top Honeymoon destination so it must be doing something right! Ocho Rios is a beautiful area, but so is Negril. Ocho Rios is more the lush/tropical area with the mountains pushing closer to the ocean thus creating many resorts with a cove like beach area (some aren't like this). Negril is where they have the 7 mile beach and while the area is still tropical, it is more flat of an area than Ocho Rios. Jamaica isn't really the best place for great snorkeling. Locals years ago prior to knowing how big of a tourist area they would become sprayed bleach within the coral to get the lobsters out. Therefore many of the coral beds have died and it takes several centuries for this to come back. On how great the weather would be depends on the time of year you are planning on going so I'm not able to answer this for you. Because depending on when you go, you could find yourself in the middle of Hurricane season. As far as the poverty is within Jamaica, it definitely is there but depending on as others said in leaving your resort will determine how much you will encounter this. Many islands in the Caribbean have there fair amount of poverty. Only a very select few have hardly any or none at all. As far as if this is the right Honeymoon destination for you, is yet to be determined. There are many islands in the Caribbean that might turn out to be a better place for you. I would highly suggest contacting a travel specialist who is familiar with the Caribbean. They can ask you various questions to help determine where they feel are the best place for you to go all within staying within your budget if possible. An agent who just agrees with everything you say isn't always going to be the best agent. This might be one that is either to lazy to try and qualify a person or they aren't knowledgeable enough to guide you differently. Sometimes of course though what a client does want ends up to be a good choice, just depends. If you have some flexibility with dates after your wedding date, we might be able to find you a bit lower price. Plus we can tell you if it even IS a good price to begin with. With an agent you always have a contact person to answer all your questions, concerns, and help you with any potential problems that may happen while on your travels. We do all that we can to avoid problems, but some are just unavoidable and it can be nice to have someone in your corner helping you with the matter. Some agencies will charge a nominal service fee, I usually determine this based off of how time consuming it is for me. Many destinations I already know who prices out the best it doesn't take to long to compare between several other vendors. Sometimes I waive the fee all together, depending. Make sure you have your passports valid for 6 months beyond your return date. If you are traveling prior to when they are allowing you to travel on a receipt printed from travel.state.gov make sure though your name is able to be pulled up to print this as I had a client who applied a month ago and her name still isn't listed on there. Even though it is saying it takes 7 - 10 days. If your names aren't listed on here there will be no exceptions on other forms of proving you applied for your passports. This rule applies for travel to the Caribbean, Mexico and Canada prior to Sept. 30th 2007. All travel after that requires a passport. Please let me know if I can help you further, otherwise I wish you the best of time on your Honeymoon!
