If I'm visiting Japan during the Bon festival, should I give 'ochugen' gifts to my hosts? |
Travel Info I've read that during the Bon festival in July Japanese people give each other gifts called 'ochugen'. As a visitor to the country, should I do the same? Would it be seen as a nice gesture or a bit ridiculous? And what about business associates? Travel Tips 'ochugen' gift are usually sent between persons personally known to each other. Bring souvenirs. Others only to your HOST family, out of courtesy, it will show them you respect thir traditional culture, and you will also do them an honour, of which they will return with interest! you will be deeply respected for that gesture. Have Japanese friends!! If you are coming to Japan during Obon, you will not be expected to give a gift... with that said... If you are going to be staying at someones home it is common to give them a gift. If you are not staying with your host it is still a good idea. Your host will feel it is there responsibility to "take care" of you while you are there. The gift is like a thank you gift in advance. For your business associates it is also a good idea to give them something small. A traditional food (from your area) is a good Idea. Also small gifts are good. They will appreciate your thoughtfulness because they know how much trouble it is to bring gifts for people. http://www.japan.survival-links.com... |
