Can anyone help me with my transition to Japan?

Travel Info
My friends and I are planning to move to Japan as soon as we graduate. But I need to know somethings about Japan before I even start packing. Is it possible to "immigrate" and live there forever or do you only get a travlers visa or student card? Where do you go to register? What do you do to get an apartment? Can you list a few websites that have Japanese translations or a website that can teach you how to speak the language? And a website that can tell me about traditions and customs in Japan. Any and all information will be helpful! Thanks!

鈾ell, you can't 'just move' to Japan without a specific visa. You may visit Japan though. The length of time will depend on your nationality. Take a look here:
List of Countries and Regions That Have Visa Exemption Arrangements with Japan

You can stay here longer if you have a specific visa. Ex. working visa, student visa, cultural visa...
You can check about visas here:

This will help you all out.
It's a little difficult for foreigners to get an apartment, but not impossible. You need a few months rent paid in advance, a job, bank account... Occasionally you might need a guarantor to sign for you. It depends on the place. Lots of sites you can start looking from home to get an idea of price, location... Here's one for starters:

Traditions and customs in Japan:

These might be helpful too:

Hope this helps and I hope you can follow your dream and make it to Japan. I love it here! Good luck!鈾?

Where are you living? This can have a huge difference on your experience. My advice would be not to live in the safe bubble with your friends, and make Japanese friends. They are very nice and friendly and will show you some really cool things you would of never seen otherwise.

OK, here are some website that will save you life:

Train Finder - http://www.jorudan.co.jp/english/...

Japan Guide - http://www.japan-guide.com/

A free foreigner magazine in English - http://metropolis.co.jp

Another free foreigner magazine - http://www.tokyonoticeboard.co.jp/...

Free Japanese lesson (learn the survival phrases, thats all i used for 3 months) - www.japanesepod101.com

I could go on for days giving you advice but you are going to have to experience it yourself. Don't compare it too much with your home country and have fun.
Currently living in Tokyo, lived in Japan for the last 4 months.
I think it would be easier for you to find some sort of job before heading off to Japan. If you speak English, this is not so difficult to do- there are plenty of programs and companies (such as JET and NOVA) that place English teachers around Japan. Even if you don't want to teach English permanently, you can use one job to get your work visa, and look for something better once you get your feet on the ground.

I would definitely recommend learning as much Japanese as you can before you leave! If you can't read the two basic alphabets, 90% of the stuff in the supermarket will be a mystery! I would start with the katakana alphabet. Although it is used less frequently than the hiragana alphabet, it is used for loan words, meaning that many things written in katakana are Western words you already know (such as shampoo.)
well first off you cant move to japan like you can just pack up and move to canada. you NEED a visa, either student or worker. so before doing anything i say enroll in school or get a job (probably teaching english is easiest job to obtain). You cannot get either visa while already in japan (you can only get the visas while youre outside of japan, for example with work visa your job obtains the visa for you before you get to japan- or else you have to leave japan temporarily until your visa is ready).

Ok after all that mess, if you do obtain a job more than likely your employer will help you out with housing and such. I know of english teacher employers that actually temporarily house their teachers until things are running smoothly. [oh and don't worry, most of the english teacher jobs dont require that you know japanese, although they do want you to have a BA]

http://www.yesjapan.com is a good site to learn japanese, but i say go to a language school in japan (im doing that this year).

as for living in japan forever... i know you can apply for residency after a certain amount of years. i hear you cant become a citizen, but can be naturalized (i still don't know what that means)

i hope i helped a little bit, good luck (we're both on the same boat here, i want to live in japan permanently too!)
if you go there expect to be called 'gaijin' on a daily basis. becides that you have to be at least semi fulent in japanese to get by. i would suggest taking japanese classes, and lots of them. learn everything you can before you go there.
on a side note. if you have to ask these questions, you arent ready... take a year off study the japanese language, culture, history, etc. and then go there...if you go there knowning nothing... it will turn out bad......
Sure, no problem.

Seriously, why are you moving to Japan if you don't already have some of those answers.? Have you ever visited Japan? How about read a book on Japan? (Try Lonely Planet or Let's Go)
