What is the japan meaning for a tear drop on the cheak?

I can recollect some Japanese rock bands members painting tear drops on their cheeks
At some 10 years ago some bands (I don't remember well the names) painted a Pierrot-like makeup on their faces, and the Pierrot type makeup means laughter through tears.Only it is not Japanese.

Are you referring to the sweat drop in anime and manga?
This:

If so, it is sweat, not a tear. Here is a little info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/sweat_drop...

Basically, it is a sign of frustration or embarrassment.
From my understanding, a tear drop on a cheek means one of three things:

1. Sadness (the person has been crying.)
2. Nerveousness or apprehension (in Japanese, it is called "HI ASE" or nervous sweat.)
3. It's hot. (regular sweat from heat or hard work.)

Check where the tear drop is placed. If it is under the eye, it is #1. If it is to the side near the temple, 2 or 3. Reading the context will help a lot also.

Hope that helps.
