Anyone know a good Japanese cell phone provider I can use?

Travel Info
I'll be studying for a year in Hiroshima, Japan next year and one of the deals I made with my family was that I would get a phone to keep in touch with them (because email isn't as personal as actually talking). I know there are companies like soft-bank, but do you know of any relatively inexpensive global services I could use??

(If this cell phone thing falls through, there is always Skype! haha)

Thanks for your time! :) I appreciate it

I guess that as a foreign student AU will be the best offer for you. They provide special service, gakuwari, and you'll be bale to use your mobile phone on half price, + they don't charge you for accepting calls here on your mobile.
Here biggest part of the students use AU as the cheapest and best for them provider. And there is Brastel card, you can accesss their site in the US
http://www.brastel.net/
You can save the number of your Brastel card once on your cell phone, and then you can call directly from your cell phone only by adding 4 figures more(the Brastel acces code) to the number you are calling.
I talk with friends in the US 70min for 2000 yen, it is like 17-18$.Brastel has many other options, like your family can transfer you credits if they buy a card too, and you happen to be out of money, or you can pay via credit card. And the customer support is excellent! Besides , it is in English! All foreign students I know use Brastel, and I'm student too.

Softbank. It's the best.
ntt docomo.....: ) the phones are cute but you cannot use it abroad.....:(
Cool I'm going to be studying a year in Tokyo (starting this october)

I say go for:

DoCoMo http://www.nttdocomo.co.jp/english/...
or
Soft-Bank, http://www.softbank.co.jp/

they both seem to be most popular companies over there.
im going to go through docomo when i go abroad.
I say yeah, go for AU, because it's the only service that gives you a student discount. Since they don't charge you for accepting calls (who does that?!) the cheapest way to talk to your family would be to have them get an international calling card and call YOU, but yeah, Brastel also works really well. DoCoMo is the most expensive, but has the best internet service. AU also has a couple of phones that are on the Global NTT network, so you'll (for a price) be able to use them all over the world. Of course, it will be expensive as not only will the service charge you for using your phone outside of Japan, but people calling you will still be calling a Japanese number. That's really only necessary if you're going to be conducting a lot of international business, which I assume you won't be.
I had docomo for awhile but was somewhat dissatisfied. Then I switched to Au--much better, and their phones look cooler to me.
For international calls I just used skype. You can call your parents' phone very cheaply, you don't have to talk computer to computer.

As a foreigner in Japan, I would highly recommend you have a cellphone of some sort. You need it in case of emergencies or if you ever get terribly lost.
