On Japan Rail, what are the differences between Green Car and Ordinary Car?

Travel Info
Please explain differences on certain trains (Shinkansen, Nozomi, etc). Thanks

Travel Tips
Well first of all...Shinkansen are split into three different types of trains (on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line...others have different categories) and they are Kodama (meaning echo), Hikari (Ray of Light), and Nozomi (hope) and nozomi is the fastest. Other shinkansen lines have other classes like Asama, and Yamabiko...etc....you can find out more about the different types of Shinkansen on their respective lines at http://www.japanrail.com/jr_shinkansen.h...

The difference between the Green Cars and Ordinary cars is "First class cars are called Green Cars and feature a green clover symbol near the entrance on the outside of the car. They have larger seats, more legroom, more luggage space than Ordinary Cars and sometimes feature a hot towel and/or beverage service. Unlike Ordinary Cars there is no standing permitted during peak holidays so the car is never crowded. Some local trains offer commuters Green Car seating, usually unreserved. Green Cars are fully covered by any Green rail pass." This was taken from the same main website... www.japanrail.com

So basically...more room....not much else. Plus on shinkansen...all rows in green cars are 2 by 2, ordinary is 3 by 2. But you still get tons of recline in ordinary...trust me. Its better than coach class on an airplane :-p

Basically, the green car is first class, and by reservation (although there are a few walk on seats open if reservations don't fill the car). Of course more expensive. Ordinary cars are divided into reserved seats and open seats. Which means you don't need a reservation, but when it comes to seating, it's first come first serve, every man for himself.
Me. My father-in-law used to be station master at a JR WEST station.
Green cars are like first class. They only provide more room. I suggest using an ordinary Car. Besides, There aren`t so many trains that have green cars.
Do you know why First class cars are called Green car in Japan?
Because the first class ticket was sold with green color in 1960's in Japan.

And it is also by occasion of Japanese national characteristics. Japanese don't like to rank ppl as 1st, 2nd. etc.
All the ppl are the same in principle.
