Is it possible for a gaijin to have a showbiz career in Japan?

Travel Info
Is it possible for a gaijin to have a showbiz/music career in Japan? My friend and I have a band and we are both crazy for Japan. We are planning to study there next year and stay for a year. So we are thinking, maybe we could give it a shot in Japan... then again, I heard the Japanese are xenophobic BUT they have been very welcoming for the past decades...

Also, we are both Filipinos by race but American citizens. Is our race gonna be a problem too since Filipinas are seen differently in Japan?

Thanks!

If you came as tourist, no one hire you. Cos it's illegal.
If you were coming with student VISA. You can work and earn income within limited hours per week.
If you work in a showbiz world illegally and police found you, you would be deported immediately.
And you need to speak Japanese fluently. Most artists who work in Japanese showbiz world can speak Japanese fluently.
Ppl do not understand English. Japan is a nation neither like Singapore nor Hongkong.

Yes, it is possible for foreigners to have a showbiz career in Japan. But if you don't speak Japanese language so well, it would be difficult for you to be successful in the kind of business.

You say that Japanese people are xenophobic. But actually in a showbiz, we have had Americans, Koreans and other foreigners who have become very popular in Japan. But they speak Japanese well enough to understand what Japanese comedians say and say something funny back to them. And I don't want to lie. So I'm gonna just say that yes Filipinos are considered usually as prostitutes in Japan. But maybe you and your friend can change the image since you guys are Americans. I don't think your race becomes an issue but your personality will be if there will be an issue.

Anyway, don't just give up. Learn Japanese language well and find a way to get into the business.

Quite honestly, it is going to be difficult if you are Filipino. Japanese favor western-looking people, (read: white Americans), for entertainment purposes, from modeling to acting/singing. The smaller forehead, nose & blue eyes are the "beauty" desire. Also, you need to speak Japanese.
At least to introduce your band and make a little small talk. But if you are going ot study here, you wil need to learn this anyway. (just to be friendly)
The JApanese are not nearly as xenophobic as you are thinking, but they do have a popular culture, like any other country, and it is based on more western nation/styles.
Well even though your an American citizen they look more on your physical appearance, if you look like a Filipino they'll treat you like one. Experience it the last time i went to japan even im a German citizen and not living in Philippines.

Also for your showbiz question, one year is just to short if you don't know how to speak Japanese fluently. But who knows with a lot of luck you might get discovered right? There are a few band i know that are having a hard time in japan because of the competition.

there are many foreigners in japanese show biz world.commedy ,music ,TV commentator and so on...but like others say ,most of them can speak japanese fluently while some are popular for their funny accented japanese.

for example among singers(there arent so many),there is a girl who is half french-american and chinese-filipino(nationality american) ,and is now becoming popular in japan.she is also a gravure idol.

hope your dreams come true.
