Japanese Holidays? |
Travel Info What japanese holiday is whare the go and visit the dead people ? I think it happens August 12? Travel Tips O-bon (銇婄泦, O-bon?) or only Bon (鐩? Bon?) is a Japanese Buddhist holiday to honor the departed spirits of one's ancestors. This Buddhist festival has evolved into a family reunion holiday during which people from the big cities return to their home towns and visit and clean their ancestors' graves. Traditionally including a dance festival, it has existed in Japan for more than 500 years. It is held from July 13 (August 13 according to the lunar calendar still observed in many regions) to the 15th ("Welcoming Obon" and "Farewell Obon" respectively) in the eastern part of Japan (Kant艒), and in August in the western part. In recent years, however, most parts of Tokyo, and by extension, the media, hold Obon in August to coincide with the summer holiday period. Obon shares some similarities with the predominantly Mexican observance of el D铆a de los Muertos, such as customs involving family reunion and care of ancestors' grave sites. -Wikipedia In Hawaii they have celebrate o-bon as well. I've gone to many obon with my family. Generally we write our ancestors names on a small boat with a candle and set it out to the ocean at the end of the season so our ancestors can find their way back to the spirit world, but the whole time during the season, you dance and sing and celebrate the return of your ancestors. O-bon; people return to their hometowns (Tokyo virtually empties out!) and visit the graves of their ancestors. It runs from August 12 (or so) to the 16th. In Kyoto, they have Daimonji on the 16th, where they burn figures into the mountainsides - the light of the fires is supposed to guide the 'ghosts' back home to the spiritual plane. Tokushima has the Obon Odori, a festival that involves dancing to end O-bon. TMS. I lived in Japan for 7 years. |
