Who here has been to Kyoto or Tokyo, Japan?

Travel Info
I am absolutely a Japanese lover. I would love to go to Japan. I love the Geisha, Sumo, especially their food. Who here has ever been to Kyoto or Tokyo before? What's it like? Have you ever seen a Geisha on the street before? How much money is it to get to Japan from America? I'm just curious.

Travel Tips
Been to a lot of places in Japan, except for Hokkaido.
Kyoto & Tokyo are both great places to visit.
If you are going to visit Kyoto, I suggest you plan for an overnight stay in a ryokan; like a Japanese hotel, to get a feeling of Japanese culture. Kyoto has a lot of places to see, use the one day bus pass to take you around the areas. Some bus stops will let you know where your bus in on the route and which buses are coming.
Tokyo...Too many things!!! : )
I have a link below that you could download information of each prefecture (not all, but most). Print them out so you have references and a plan / shedule for that particular area.

Costs? Depends what you want out of this vacation...
Airline tickets could run approx $1,000 roundtrip. Depending on your origin.
Then you would have to calculate hotel, motel, hostels, etc.
Also mode of transportation...Train, taxi, bus, etc
Food. Quite small and pricey. The biggest size of drinks in 7-11 is a small size in America.

Not trying to put a downer... Just be prepared. Bring a lot of travellers check, if you don't use them all, you could always use them back in the US. Because vacation really sucks when you run out of money or if you have to sacrifice on things you would like to have.

You could find deals / specials. Try checking your local wholesaler for airline tickets / package deals.
If you are planning to do ala carte or backpack, I suggest you invest in the JR pass. A one way bullet train from Tokyo to Hiroshima may be approx $100 US, non refundable if you miss your train. But with a JR pass, just catch the next train, the pass allows you unlimited rides on several, not all modes of transportation on the JR lines...Bullet trains, trains, buses, and ferry.
Below is the website for the Japan National Tourist Organization. It has information on different regions of Japan that you could download and print, also info on JR pass.

Geishas are not as common as you may think. They are mostly for shows, special occasions, or certain areas. You really don't see them on the streets every second.
If anything you would see middle age to older women wearing traditional kimonos walking around as their regular apparel.

Try making pen pals with someone in Japan, that way you immerse yourself in the local way of life.

Hope this helps, have fun in Japan.

KYOTO um...I was born there...

it depends where you are in america for the money part

you only see geisha in hanamachis....
Been to both, love them both too. Kyoto is just so amazingly lovely, and Tokyo is a 24-hour city.

There's just too much to say. Get yourself a really good guidebook, or two, and enjoy reading them in whatever order interests you. Talk with a travel agent, or go online, to see about fares too and from Japan.

Take your time to get to know more and more - and one day, you'll be ready to just take the plunge and DO IT!

Why don't you think about taking a job teaching English in Japan? Demand is high, and it's a great reason to get over there.
my mum is japanese and our grandparents live there in kanagawa - zushi near yokohama. my dad went to tokyo university for smthng and we stayed in tokyo for a while. tokyo was more 'town' kind of place compared to kanagawa. there are more freaky ppl and more messier.

but i've stayed in chiba too. my grandpa has a house there and we live in the country area. it's so BORING!!! it's just trees and noisy frogs, cocroaches and golf areas!! but the town must be cool.

i'm glad u like japan. i'm not sure abt the cost but u can check some websyts depending on which plane u take! :)
Tokyo is a modern technological business center. It is also the entertainment center of Japan. Anything you want to do in Japan, you can do it in Tokyo. Kyoto is the ancient capital of Japan. It is the most historical and cultural city in Japan. I did see a Geisha walking on the streets of Kyoto when I visited a temple....I think it was Ginkakuji. The price of a ticket from America to Japan will depend on where in America you are. Plan in advanced for the best rates. It'll probably be about $1,000. Contact a travel agent for help.
i have been to both of these cities, i went to japan last summer. it is amazing! u will love it. yes, i visited the geisha village and saw a geisha on the street. tokyo is way over rated, it is best at night thou
