Before the Meiji Era, Japanese men actually did know how to enjoy themselves and worked to have family time. Modernization as influenced by the west destroyed the Japanese family, and the man's perception of his role in the family. What furthered that was WWII. In order to get back on their feet ALL Japanese worked their butts off. and over the 50 years post WWII, they became an economic powerhouse. That solidified their work ethic. And of course, it became ingrained in the Japanese psyche and especially the men.

To go out drinking?
why you confuse business with pleasure? i bet you even have the tea ready?
I think its something to do with Asian culture, the men are expected to work hard to provide the best things for their family even if it means that they don't get to spend time with them. My cousin is married to a Chinese guy, he said that to him its more important to earn enough money to give their child the best education, even if he has to work much longer hours. It might be similar in Japan.
i think it is a cultural thing to have the quest for success.
during the industrial revolution of Japan, everything revolved around the company, and in some cases, they even built the towns around the factories.
It depends on the job they have. If they work for a private company or the government, they get so much pressure from their boss or co-workers that they feel that they need to stay longer and work harder. They know that their family is important but some people who don't know how to control to give the pressure off of themselves try too much to show that they are working so hard to other people so that they don't need to be complained by their boss or other older co-workers.

Especially if people are so young and try to leave early or at 5 p.m., older people would think that these young workers are so lazy and rude. And if they are asked to go to have a drink with older workers or their boss, again they are pressured to go there with them because if they don't, they will be considered as a ruder worker.

Anyway, usually these people who work so late are pressured to stay late and go have a drink with other co-workers and boss. It's just how it is. But of course depending on the job, some Japanese men come home really early. My dad, for example, came home before 4. But my mom who worked for the government worked almost always late and came home after 6 or 7. So depending on the job that they have, people can come home early or late.
