I'm a Japanese man. Hamasaki is the most popular female singer in Japan in the last few years. She was popular particularly among young women.

Oh, sorry. I should have said "she was". Recently she was being replaced by Kumi Koda as a queen of J-pop. Now Kumi Koda is clearly is the hottest female singer in Japan. Hamasaki is declining.
Ayumi Hamasaki is one of the most popular singers of all time in Japan, she has a very good singing voice, tho it can tend to run a bit high pitched sometimes. She is best known for music with a faster beat, however she does quite often sing slower songs as well.

Well she's Japanese pop star. Some call her the pop princess. She's very famous. What Selena said is absolutely right.
