Children in Japanese Onsen? |
Travel Info We will be spending two weeks in Japan in August along with our 8-year old daughter. She was only a year old the last time we visited Japan and my husband and I took turns soaking in the baths at the Ryokan we were staying at. We would like to try another Ryokan in the Osaka area but I am worried that my daughter would not be welcome to bathe with me. Are children welcome in the baths, or should I try to find a Ryokan with a family bath? Thanks! Travel Tips No, need to find a special ryokan. It should be find for your daughter to enjoy the onsen with you. As many of the other posters have said it is very common for toddlers and young children to join their parents in the onsen. Just make sure that she understands it is not to be treated like a swimming pool (jumping, splashing). There shouldn't be any problems if she is well behaved, which I presume she will be (* -*)! Hope you have a great time in Japan and a safe journey! Source(s): Living in Japan and frequenting many onsens! Other Travel Tips Children are allowed into the onsen. Usually if you don't want a lot of people there you should go a bit sooner then most some where around 6:00 pm or a bit later but i guess you know that already. It should be fine to bring your daughter to the onsen with you, as long as you go along with her. I would even see mothers bringing their young sons into the bath- not a big deal if they're toddlers, but some of them looked kinda old to me! Eight year old is no problem. But please let her not to bubble and speak in a loud voice in the Onsen. It is not about a volume. It is said that the frequency which Caucasian and Asian hear in the ear is different. For example, English need higher frequency than Japanese. I mean Caucasian kids' voice stick to Japanese ear very much. No offense. You know even eye is different. Baseball players put black mark below their eyes. But Ichiro and Matsui, and other Asian players, does the same thing rarely. Children are very welcome. For Japanese..it's like bonding between parents and children...so age doesn't really matter..enjoy your stay! |
