Hello! I am presently waiting for my certificate of eligibility to get a working visa for Japan.?

Travel Info
I have plans to get married before I leave. Will the change of status affect the approval of my working visa, since my submitted documents indicate that I'm still single?

Can I also use my maiden name in Japan because I wouldn't have the time to change my name in official documents?

Thank you very much.

Travel Tips
One thing that I can say about life in Japan and the Japanese, is that they love rules and follow them religiously.

Yes, it could be a problem that you are changing your status. I'm not saying that they won't grant you the visa but they will probably want things to be changed and possible re-submitted. I would ask the Japanese Consulate about that. They will probably be very interested to know if your husband will be joining you.

Using your maiden name. Probably not. I know that for me, on all official documents, I must use my full name, including middle name. Your name is really a big deal here. One example of how sticky they can be about it: my wife didn't immediately change her name to mine after marriage but when she got pregnant we wanted to change it so we would all have the same family name. We had to go through a huge process and a judge decide if it was OK. They take your name quite seriously, but don't worry, you can change your name on your passport really easily. There are a couple of pages at the back of your passport for amendments so just ask at the passport authority that is nearest you.

Good luck! After 10 years living in Japan, I assure you, you'll need it.

Are you getting married to a Japanese national? If so your visa process might have gotten a whole lot easier.

The spouse visa is possibly one of the easiest ones to get, but they don't make it easy for you to get it. You still need to jump through a lot of hoops and provide the necessary paperwork but there is no COE that you need to fill out.

Basically, if memory serves me correctly, you'll need 7 things for a spousal visa.

1) Koseki Tohon - this is the family register and your name needs to be added to it. This can be done at city hall at whatever prefecture you wind up in.

2) Jyumin Hyo (registered address certificate) - Everybody in Japan needs to have a registered address with City Hall. This is of course for payment of ward taxes more than anything else. You'll have to get the sheet from City Hall showing your registered address.

3) All the necessary paperwork - these are the forms you need to fill out with all the pertinent information.

4) Foreigner registration card - all foreigners in Japan need to carry this at all times and you'll need to show it when you're getting processed.

5) An Employment Cerificate, Authorised Business certificate or company registration certificate. If you're not working, then it's your guarantor that needs to supply these. It can be your spouse's or somebody in their family (like his father).

6) Income-tax payment ceritificate, Witholding income tax slip. or Declaration of income tax return. Again, if you've never paid taxes you'll need to have your guarantor give you this.

7) Your passport.

And for your name, that's really up to you. Japan doesn't really care about that and it's more of a personal thing for you and your husband.

When I got married we decided that she should keep her own name while we were in Japan for no other reason than it would cause less trouble for her that way. Once we finally leave Japan, if she wants to change her name at that point she's free to do so.
Married to a Japanese woman for several years now. Had to renew my visa twice so far.
I agree with the second answerer...

Please contact Japan Embassy and inquire about your case..
You could follow up the documents..Better safe than sorry.
