Travel to Iwo Jima. A friend is very interested in traveling to Iwo Jima and wants to climb Mount Suribachi.? |
Travel Info Are tourists even allowed there? Would you first travel to Japan and then fly. What else is there? Any information would be appreciated. Travel Tips Tell him not to bother because there's nothing to see and I don't even know if there are any ways to get to it other than by military means. Others Yes tourists are allowed. Its not much to see. I suppose the only attraction is for history buffs. Iwo Jima never had any history until WW2. 20 thousand Japs died defending this piece of **** of an island. But they must have been courageous. The Americans blasted that place for days before landing. If all the metal from the shells that hit the island in the Navy's bombardment was collected and melted down. It would cover the island a meter thick. And you know what? The Japs were all underground and barely scratched! War doesn't get much worse than what the Jap soldier must have experienced on Iwo Jima. I wouldn't have wanted to be a Marine in the invasion force either. War is insanity. Iwo Jima would have been a better place to drop the atomic bomb. If any place can be called a better place. But we needed the airfields on Iwo Jima. Hi, I'm Japanese and I've never been to Iwo Jima. Actually I didn't really know about the island until I saw the movie, Letters from Iwo Jima. But anyways, I searched about Iwo Jima trip on Japanese websites and I found out that normal civilians don't live on the island. The island is a base for the Self-Defense Forces now and it's difficult for normal civilians to travel to the island. But there is a cruise trip to go to Iwo Jima only a couple of times a year. However, nobody except the Self-Defense Forces can enter the island so even though people attend the trip, they are not allowed to get off the ship. I don't know if your friend can make a reservation for the kind of trip through an American travel agency in the US. But I'm sure there are travel agents for Americans in Japan so find the kind of travel agents if your friend really wants to participate in the cruise trip to Iwo Jima. Or if s/he can speak Japanese, s/he can call JTB ( travel agency) and ask when there is a trip to Iwo Jima. There was actually a cruise trip to Iwo Jima about 3 weeks ago and this was the advertisement of the trip: http://www.lextours.com/ogasawara/ioutou... Japanese girl Tourists are NOT allowed to visit Iwo Jima, except for some research or during any special event. You can't visit there by yourself. Only Self-Defense Forces enter the island. What the hell let the above guy say like that? Don't dream and get a noid. |
