I have a question about phone calls in Japanese.? |
Travel Info If I make a phone call to a Japanese store (not necessarily in Japan), and they pick up the phone and start speaking Japanese, is it more respectful to respond in Japanese or say you cant speak Japanese in English instead? -cause I DO know how to say "do you speak English" in Japanese and well, I was wondering! ^.^; - Thanks alot! Travel Tips If the business in the USA, then I think it respectful to ask them "Do you speak English?" In English. Even though you can say in Japanese, you are making a call to a company in the USA. I work for a Japanese company (in the USA) and its very common. Others I think if the store is not in Japan, then English should be fine, or whatever the native language is in the country where the business is. If the store is in Japan, you better speak Japanese if you can. I'm Japanese and have lived in the states for more than 10 years. And when I make a phone call to a Japanese store in the US, they don't answer the phone in Japanese but English. They usually start speaking Japanese when customers start speaking Japanese to them. So if you want to talk to them in English, just use English. Japanese girl Unless they're in Japan, or have such a huge Japanese clientelle that no foreigner would ever call, they'll speak the language of the country they're in. So if it's in the States, talk to them in English. If you want to say some Japanese words go right ahead but it's not necessary. what would you do if some one called you up and spoke in only Japanese?? You wouldnt understand them and politely apologise before hanging up. They will try and speak in English to you, but it wouldnt be very clear communication, unless you were lucky and they spoke English What everyone else said about a Japanese store in the US....... If you are calling Japan, you should speak Japanese first and ask "do you speak English?" to give them a chance to adjust...or get someone who does speak English. |
