What do japanese people think of americans? |
Travel Info I am american and i am staying in japan over the summer. I read a lot of japanese manga, and the books make fun of americans a lot. They say Americans do things on their own(not in groups) and that we look at notes while we take tests. What other things do they think about americans? i am not saying ALL japanese think this, just some of them Travel Tips from my experience living there, older japanese hates all foreigners PERIOD! and younger generations LOVE us! just to give you an overview on what the OLDIES think about americans stereotypically... 1. they stink (literally, have you ever experienced it on subways when they don't wanna sit beside you?) 2. ill-mannered (i don't blame them after puking all over their streets and howling in the middle of the night after a drinking spree) 3. rapists (after all the incidents with the troops) 4. arrogant (self-explainatory) 5. many other stereotypical reasons ... they always say that they are open to globalization, but the truth is..... they are discriminating @#$%! *hehe* but for the YOUNGER japanese... They think AMERICANS are sooo cool! as a matter o' fact, most of them would rather be something else but a japanese. look around and you'll see the eminem, 50cent j-lo and beyonce wannabe's! Others 1. Japanese think Americans are smarter, because Americans drop Atomic bomb in Japan during world war 2. 2. You need to learn Japanese language to cope with them. Japanese are sensitive and you need to be extra careful. 3. Japanese think that Americans don't have patience. I would imagine they're pretty friendly. My dad was telling me about his numerous trips to Japan (he doesn't pay for the flight; the place he works for does :-) ) and how the teenagers there were practicing their English on him. He told me that they walked up to him and said "How do you do?" It could be just them, but there's a chance that the Japanese have a positive outlook on us Americans. Google http://japundit.com/archives/2007/06/06/... When you go to Japan everyone will know your not from there and almost all will be extremely nice to you. They will probably try to speek English to you as well and will get a kick out of you trying to speak Japanese. If you mess up they will laugh with you, not at you. If you want to know what they think about Americans look up the Japanese show Oh! Mikey. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/oh%21_mikey... going to japan There are two schools of thought on this one, and it's not just Americans specifically but towards foreigners in general. You'll find that they either avoid you, or they welcome you. The people that avoid you are usually the older generation that haven't had much contact with foreigners or are somehow afraid that you'll "contaminate" them with your foreign manners. There's nothing you can do about this, just smile and continue walking. Sometimes they just stare at you, sometimes (and I've seen it happen) some salaryman gets drunk and starts harassing or cussing out somebody simply because they're a foreigner. It's rare when that happens and in three years here it's happened to me only twice. Elsewhere they will welcome you with smiles, may try to practice their English on you and in some cases even bring you along with them to the local izakaya and buy you a beer. Again, this is a case by case situation but like the old man cussing me out in the previous case, this one liked me so much he bought me a beer and some gyoza. |
