Has anybody stayed in Capsule hotels? If yes, how is it like? |
Travel Info Has anybody stayed in Capsule hotels? If yes, how is it like? Travel Tips It was an interesting night. My friend and I had been out at our yearly bonenkai (company end of year party) out in Kawasaki. Problem is we wound up being stuck out there as we missed the last train so we managed to find a capsule hotel nearby. It was cheap, about 4000 yen for the night, and very clean which was a plus. They give you some slippers, a locker key to store your stuff and shoes and you could buy whatever toiletries from a vending machine on every floor. If you needed it a yukata to sleep in they'd provide that as well. The capsule itself was large enough for me to lie down in without my feet sticking out the end, and I could even sit up in it without bumping my head. Each capsule had a temperature control, TV and radio. At the end where the capsule leads into the hallway, there's a small curtain or bamboo slide that latches from your side to give you some privacy. I would recommend that you purchase some earplugs as the snores of a dozen drunken salarymen can really keep a person awake. The washroom is of a communal type, and the bath is of your typical Japanese style with the sit down showers on one side and the large furo to other. There is also a break room where there are vending machines serving drinks, beer and snacks. All in all it's not a bad place to spend the night, but I would never call it comfortable. Others I stayed in one in the Ameyokocho area of Ueno. The business is geared towards men who need a place to stay but did not plan on staying away from home. They can give you robes and toiletries that you need and may not have with you. The capsules are much bigger than one might imagine. I could sit up and not hit my head. There were TVs in each capsule. The bath is a common bath area in typical Japanese onsen style. There are showers and a huge central common bath tub which, is more like a small indoor pool. This HP is a typical Capsule hotel's. http://www.capsuleinn.com/ Capsule hotels are mostly for salarymen who want to stay out on the town or who somehow missed all the trains home. No reason to go there deliberately,as there are also many gaijin houses cheaper and roomier, as well actually fun. I've stayed in a capsule hotel in Shibuya twice and one in Aomori City. The one is Shibuya was a quintessential capsule hotel as the beds were literally a capsule. You crawled in head first and pulled the shade down at your feet and you were in your own little coffin. The one in aomori was more like a train sleeper car seat with the which you crawled into from the side. You didn't feel as encapsulated. Both provided me with simple toiletries, yukata bath robe, and slippers. The one in Shibuya has a sento bath. |
