Get the latest Lonely Planet book on Japan, a.k.a. 'the bible' amongst travellers in Japan, & read it cover to cover before you go. There are so many wonderful & fascinating things in Japan, too many to list here. It depends on how long you're going for, your budget & what time of year.

Stay away from the big hotels & check into the traditional ryokan inns. Get a JR RailPass (or several) as this is the best way to tour or get around & try all the differing local cuisines available in the railway platform lunch boxes (ekiben).

Youth Hostels are not limited to the young & are a wonderful resource for local tourist information.

If it's winter, check out all the different styles of hot springs (onsen) or go skiing in Hokkaido & visit the Shinto shrine after midnight on New Years Eve. In autumn follow the wonderful autumn colours down the country, or in spring move up the country to view the cherry blossoms & drunken parties underneath them. Summer can be humid, especially during the rainy season in July. Look out for, and maybe even join in, local festivals.

well depends on how long you have and where you are staying..I say go to heroshima look around there where the A bomb went off. kyoto is beautiful. tokyo is amazing. or just go hop a train and ride till you find something you want to see and go do it ,

There is a lot to do.

Tokyo--Shopping, nightlife, Tokyo Tower, Imperial Palace.
Kyoto--Nijo Castle, temples....Kinkakuji is my favorite.
Nara--Wild deer roaming the city.
Hiroshima--Peace park, Miyajima Island
Hokkaido--Outdoor activities, Sapporo is an incredible city.

Go to Nikko and Kamakura to see old temples.
See a fireworks festival near the water somewhere.
Go to Hakone for natural beauty.
Go to a 100 yen store to find truly strange things, like earpicks, to bring back.
Go to an Irish bar in Tokyo.
Eat some strange things, and try out those nice pit toilets.
