What would happen if i visit japan and get into a fist fight? |
Travel Info would i go to jail? for how many days? or would the police just slap my wrist and let me go because im an American? Travel Tips You'd probably go to jail and the guy you were fighting might get off with a slap on the wrist. Or you might both go to jail, it depends on the cop you're dealing with. First of all, you don't want to go to a Japanese jail. You seriously never want to see the inside of one of those places because you'll have no rights. In fact the cops can hold you for as long as they want without charging you with anything. The longest they can do it legally is about 72 hours, but if they want to they can go to a judge and get it extended for another 72 hours and do this indefinitely. If you find yourself in a Japanese jail, refuse to sign anything. They will present you with a paper (written in Japanese of course) and pressure you to sign it so you can go free. This is your confession. If you sign it, you're now guilty and if you were to go in front of a judge that paper would hold up in court. Remember, in Japan you must prove your innocence and are guilty before being proven innocent. This partially explains Japan's 98% cconviction rate. Do not think for a moment you'll be treated easily because you're a foreigner. If anything, you might be treated worse. So, you refuse to sign anything. Insist on an English speaking officer or translator and don't sign anything unless it's written in English and you can read it. Now the easiest way to get out of this is simply not to get into a fist fight, and I would strongly advise you to follow this. That one guy you picked a fight with can and will call 15 of his buddies on his cell phone and they're all going to come streaming down on you when you leave the club. Just apologise and walk away, I know it's not an easy thing to accept but sometimes you need to swallow your pride. Others If you were to be treated special because you're american while traveling, i dont think it'd be in a good way. Dishonor your family!!! Why on earth would you anticipate getting in a fist fight with some of the kindest, most polite people on earth. And we wonder why we are referred to as ugly Americans. Are you just looking for a fist fight with someone smaller than you? Or someone who isn't prone to fight back? Stay home, go to Jersey where fist fights are an accepted social echange of ideas. There is no place on Earth where you'll be treated fairly for being an American. They police will find an English speaker to talk to you AFTER they arrest you. You'd go to jail just like anyone else, depending on what actually happened. And I can assure you, you do NOT want to spend any time in a Japanese jail. They are far more stricter than a American jail. Americans are not celebrities, and the Japanese will definitely not allow tourists to break the law, simply because they are from a specific country. Your sentence will likely depend on how far this fist fight goes. You will spend time in jail before your trial and possible penalties include: monetary payments, jail/prison time, deportation and being banned from entering the nation for up to five years. If the fist fight was especially brutal, you could be banned from entering the country ever again. Here is some info for you: http://japan.usembassy.gov/e/acs/tacs-71... I assume this is hypothetical, but I wouldn't recommend testing whether Americans are above the law or not, because you will definitely find that they are not... |
