A 2 weeks stay in Tokyo....? |
Travel Info How much money (yen) would one need if he/she is staying in Tokyo for 2 weeks aside from the hotel and flight fees. Just how much to live on for food, activities, and shopping. Does anyone have any roughly ideas? It would be best to get the answer from someone that has actually lived or is living in Tokyo. Travel Tips Food can be as cheap as 400 yen. Beer can also be as cheap as 400 yen per bottle or drink or whatever. Trasnportation depends on how far you go. Never take taxis. Movies are 1,800 yen a ticket. Shopping will depend on where in Tokyo you visit. Others Depends on what you want to do. I suggest that you take plenty of cash and American money. Most of the time if they accept American Dollars and Yen.. I just recently got out of the Navy where I was stationed in Yokosuka (about 1 hour south of Tokyo) for the last two years. What I would say is, figure on having about 5000 yen a day (which equates to about 42 dollars) to spend. Cause you'll most likely take trains everywhere, and if you're in Tokyo, you'll be taking the Yamanote line which averages 190 Yen a person everytime you use it. Restaurants can be pricey, about 1800 a person. You can find Wendy's, and McDonald's in a lot of places, and they're actually cheaper than in the states (with smaller serving sizes on the drinks). Most places to go sight seeing will cost between 400 -1000 yen to get in (like museums. Tokyo Tower is about 850 yen a person to go the middle leverl). Clubs at night in Shibuya or Rippongi will be about 1000 yen before midnight, after that they'll be from 3000 - 5000 to get in (depends on what's going on that time of year). Food - If your hotel has a free breakfast, then great. If it has a free buffet breakfast then even better. Fill up on this, you'll save not only on breakfast but on part of your lunch as well. Otherwise, depending on where you go and what you eat, you can expect to pay between 2500 - 6000 yen for food a day. This doesn't necessarily include alcohol however. There are a lot of cheap places to eat, and a lot of places where they charge an arm and a leg for food. I would say around 1000 - 1200 yen for lunch is average. You can however find stuff that is cheaper. Check out the big supermarkets for some ready to eat meals. They normally have a nice selection and they sell beer too. But be careful when choosing your beer, there's a product on the shelves that looks and smells like beer, tastes almost like beer and is a little cheaper than beer. It's called "happoshu" and it's evil in liquid form. This is near beer and one can of this is enough to give some people a headache, more than this and you'll get a wicked hangover. If it's marked "銉撱兗銉?quot; then it's beer. If it's marked anything else, then it's not. Do not be fooled by words like "Draft" or "Brew" in the name. And ignore any words like "fresh", "refreshing", or "tasty" in the description. You've been warned. Activities - This depends on what you see. Most places charge a small fee, even some parks do this but it usually means less crowds. Admission to most places should cost under 1000 yen unless it's a really special place with a lot to see in which case it costs more. Shopping - Honestly I don't know as this depends on what you want to buy. Depending on where you're from most electronics are similar in price to what you can find back home. One trick is to try to find last year's model as it will be considerably cheaper than the newest one that came out. Otherwise if it comes to clothes or something like that, unless you're of a smaller size you'll have a hard time finding stuff here to fit you. Travel - Get yourself a JR rail pass which you can only apply for outside of Japan. It will save you a lot of money on rail travel including the Shinkansen. More information on it here: http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/. If you don't plan on travelling a lot, plan on about 1000 yen each way as the trains and subways in Japan are distance based. Do not take a taxi unless you have no choice, they're very expensive and after midnight are the only form of transportation you can get. |
