What is japan's money like if you travel there?

Travel Info
I am going to japan in a week on a exchange program for 2 weeks. How much do you think i need to bring? I am planning to bring 550 with me (because i am staying with someone). Or do you think that is not enough.

I also wonder what things cost there (like tokyo). If i wanted to buy a can of soda, how much would it be?

thank you

Travel Tips
I'm assuming you're staying at somebody's house or apartment? If so you should have enough with $550 as rent is taken care of and possibly some of your meals. I would offer to pay for some of my food depending on how well you know the person and whether or not the offer for them to stay at your place will be reciprocated.

Your main charge will be transportation which can be pricey as it's distance based. The usual cost is between 130 - 190 yen for one or two stations and it goes up from there. If you're going to travel a lot, plan on about 1000 yen each way.

A can of soda will be around 120 yen for a small 300ml can and 150 yen for a 500ml can. You might find some to be a little more or a little less depending on if it's from a vending machine, from a store, from a discount store or where the vending machine is located. If it's on top of a mountain, the price will be considerably higher than if it's on a main street in Tokyo.
Others
Even if you stay with someone, accommodation is too expensive. You have to pay $40 per night ($40x2=$80).
Food is around $5 to $10 if you have a simple dish. So, $30
is max per day. If you stay 2weeks, it would be $980 without any gifts or entertainment.

A can of soda (330ml) is about $1. 500ml is about $1.5.
When you say you are going to "stay with someone" on this exchange program, do you mean that you are going to stay with a host family?

If you are staying with a host family, then $550 should be plenty, because your host family will pay for many things and you obviously will not have to worry about hotels and food (except when you go out to eat). They may have you pay for your own entrance to museums and tourist attractions, but those will not be that expensive.

Two weeks is not very long. I stayed for four weeks with a host family, and I brought about $600 spending money. I only ended up spending about $250. I could have spent more, but that's still only half of your budget, and you're staying half as long.

Just be aware of how much money you have and try to find out where your host family is taking you, so you can pay for it if they want you to. For teenagers in Japan, I think CDs are the most notably expensive items. They are likely to cost around 28 U.S. dollars (typically ranging from 3000-3600 yen).
