Japan Salary? |
Travel Info One of my friend has received an offer from a Japanese IT company for a role in Tokyo. His offer is 450,000 yen per month. Would like to know whether this pay package is sufficient to maintain a healthy lifestyle and save a handsome amount per month? Travel Tips That would be a real good salary there. He can have a great lifestyle. As an English teacher, I made 260,000 yen a month and I was able to live comfortably. Others That's about 44k/year. Cost of living would be similar to any major US city - think NY, LA. I'd say that'd be a comfortable living (with a tiny percentage going into the bank per month); however, it depends entirely on lifestyle... Good luck to your friend...or should I say, "Banzai!"? The two main factors that will decide whether or not he can save much are (a) who is paying for accommodation and (b) will he be getting bonuses. If both are nos, then it's a so-so salary, especially if he has some experience. If both are yes, then he should be able to save a decent sum every month. When I was in a similar situation, I was saving almost 100,000 yen of a 300,000 take-home salary with very little effort, plus saving over 500,000 yen of my twice-yearly bonuses. BTW, most Japanese companies also pay your train commuting tickets - he should check that's covered too. That's a pretty good amount and similar to what I got when I first started in Tokyo. The "benchmark" by which I judge a salary in Tokyo is that of the average English teacher. They make, on average, 250,000 yen a month and are able to pay their rent, buy food and have some left over for little extras. So if your friend is getting almost double that amount, he should be fine in Tokyo. Just remember though they only pay once a month so he's going to need some money in advance to carry him through until his first payday. Was getting 400,000 yen a month for doing IT stuff 3 years ago. For a single person, yes, as the others have said it is a good salary. But for a family of 4, living in Tokyo, that would be bare minimum. 鈾hat's an excellent offer, your friend should be just fine! I do agree with Looking 鈫憈hough, if he has a family and will be in Tokyo it may just be enough depending on who pays the rent, International schools... Also, depending on what you mean by a healthy lifestyle?? Car, parking space, club memberships, golf, entertainment(osumo, baseball...), hot spring trips...??? He would most likely still be OK. Hubby and I both work, live in Tokyo, have the above mentioned 'healthy lifestyle' and live well! Congrats to your friend! Hope he'll invite you over to Japan for a visit.鈾? |
