There are gang members in Japan. But compared to the US, you wouldn't probably see a lot of gang members in public but you will probably easily spot bousouzoku which is a group of people who drive motorcycles and cars around, take over streets and create a lot of troubles at nigt:

It's nothing like what gang members do in the US but still these people are dangerous if they don't want to control themselves. And even though having guns in Japan is illegal, some people do have guns. I know that. If they don't have guns, they do carry something to defend themselves. It's not surprising for normal civilians to think that they carry small knives at least to protect themselves because they do have enemies. Anyway, you can't really look down on these small Japanese people because you think you are a big guy. I don't think it really matters if you are big or not. If you are stubbed, you are stubbed.

Anyway, if you find these people, don't stare at them. That's the only thing I can say.

By the way, if you don't go to some strip clubs or the kind of places, you won't probably see " chinpira" who can be members of bousouzoku. But if chinpira start cussing you, you won't probably get away with it or if you are lucky, they won't attack you. I can't really have a firm answer for that because it depend on chinpira. Some chinpira are nice people and some aren't. So if you are lucky, you won't get hurt. Source(s): Japanese girl

All I know is that they have the Yakuza like the China has the Triad.

I wouldn't say that gangs in foreign countries aren't dangerous. Guns aren't allowed in homes in Japan (so I've heard) but I'm thinking that they can be obtained illegally (like every other country on this planet).

They have mafia-like gangs that are called Yakuza. Are they less violent than in US? Probably... because, yes you're quite right, they have no access to gun. But then again... depends on how you think of it. If you rather be killed by gun cos it's painless (compared to other means of killing) than the US gangs are less violent.

Anyway, I don't think gang-related violence is a big threat in Japan compared to the incidents in US.

I think the Yakuza is very powerful but they aren't very violent.

They are in control of guns, prostitution, drugs, or anything illegal. They also are "in charge" or many local bars.
