Travel Tips
I have been to Japan (not South Korea), so maybe I can give you a little insight to where I have been:

Food: from a US perspective, food (that is not Japanese) is more expensive then what you would be used to. One thing is portions. They are much smaller than in the US, so that is something you might want to keep in mind. If you end up going to a KFC or Subway or Mc Donald鈥檚, you will pay more and get usually a lot less. In terms of Japanese food, you can find some fairly reasonable places to eat. Just like anywhere you go in the world, there are cheap and expensive places.

Hotels: They range from $60-200 USD a night on up, depending on the time of the year, mainly. A lot like hotels all over the world. You do have many choices when it comes to places to stay: western style, ryokann (traditional style inn), bed and breakfast style. There are even hotels at osen (hot springs), so you have many choices. If you are traveling on a budget, you might want to check out hostels as well, which are usually $20-30 USD. If you are looking to meet other people from all over the world, this is a very good option.

Service: The kind of service you get from the people in Japan will surprise those that are from the USA. It's a totally customer-centric place. For example: if you go to a store and ask where a certain kind of TV is, the person will take you to that TV, answer any questions you might have, and direct you to other possible options and when you are ready, ring up your order. It's not something you see every day, that's for sure.

People: From my experiences, I met the most amazing people when I was in Japan. Even in Tokyo, which is akin to New York City or Los Angeles, people were always very friendly and willing to help me out. When I was lost or not sure as to where I needed to go next, people seemed to show up out of nowhere and help me out. I had people offer help even when I did not need any. Other Travel Tips
korea is cheaper, but japan is better. food is better in japan, people are freindly in japan, but korean people are probably friendly too, service is good, japanese people are pretty friendly. And Japanese people discourage tips.
When I went to Japan I couldn't find my hotel (my Japanese wasn't that good), then a stranger came up to me, guessed the name of the hotel, and walked me to the hotel, he wasn't working he was just a good person.
Korea is cheaper but Japan is better in every other category.

Better food, hotels, service, nice people, better sites...
Both are good places to visit, Japan being more expensive.
korea is cheap but japan is better
