It all depends on your budget and how much time you have. Remember that Japan is about the size of California.

Kyoto--Nijo castle, Kinkakuji, Ginkakuji, Toji, numerous others.

Nara--Deer park and the city's temples.

Tokyo--Tokyo Tower, Imperial Palace, shopping (Shibuya, Akihabara), drinking (Shibuya, Roppongi)

Hiroshima--Peace Park, Miyajima Island
