He has been in power since 1989 and is quite old. In Japanese tradition, they only allow men to be heirs to the thrown. When Akihito's oldest son only had daughers, it caused a debate in Japan. They discussed allowing girls to be heirs to the thrown. It just so happened that Akihito's youngest son had a son last year. Once there was a new male heir to the thrown, the debate died. |
