What are the advantages of surrendering my Japanese alien registration card? |
Travel Info I'm leaving Japan soon and I still have a valid visa/rentry permit. Probably not coming back but would like the choice. Why surrender my alien card? What does immigration do with the cards? Will they tell my ward office I'm gone? Travel Tips It IS the law, so I'm sorry but you must surrender it. Others I think it is the law. You have to surrender it. There are no advantages or disadvantages of surrendering it. If you are probably not coming back, then what is the big deal? If your visa is still valid, and you are thinking of coming back, then make sure to get a re-entry permit or else your work visa will be cancelled. Worse case is you're blacklisted, if you ever decide to reapply for a work/spouse/work-holiday visa. If you do not have a return-ticket, immigration may ask you too surrender it or prove that you are coming back. It is the law to give it to the immigration official when leaving for a period longer than the remaining duration of your visa. Advantages; makes a good souvenier If you really want to take it home, just tell the local ward/city office that your wallet was stolen and they will issue you a replacement. experience Thank you for boarding vessel "Japan" on the Pacific Ocean. We are looking forward to seeing you again. Thank you and good bye. You don't have a choice, customs will take it from you when you depart from japan for the final time. They take it so they know you are officially gone so you don't enjoy certain tax/pension privileges/benefits. |
