I am travelling to Japan and only have a Solo card. Can I withdraw cash at cash machines with this?

Is Solo able to be used at cash machines in Japan or will I need to take travellers cheques?

I don't think so. However, if your card has any mark in the following site, you can withdraw cash at post office in Japan.

Most ATM of Japanese bank is not compatible with other countries.

And remember, Japanese ATM is not 24hr available.

Possibly. I think the most used card is Visa although sometimes most machines accept MasterCard - a bit of a lottery sometimes. Enjoy Japan!
Maybe, but don't count on it. Japan may be one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world, but it's an incredibly inbred system. The Japanese have their own systems for everything. Put differently, their bank cards are different from ours, so cross-compatibility is limited. The funny thing is that your card's symbol will probably be on the machine. But that doesn't mean it'll work. This is the case for credit cards, too, so don't count on using plastic while you're there.

I strongly recommend you take either cash or travellers cheques. Cash is really the best way to go so long as you're not the kind of person who gets nervous carrying large sums of money. Japan is very much a cash society. Also, you might find getting travellers cheques cashed is a hassle. If you're staying at an expensive hotel that caters to western tourists, I imagine you'll be fine. But if you're not going that route, you might have to deal with banks. And Japanese banks aren't so much fun to deal with.
Used to live there
Only post office ATMS, Citibank and Shinsei bank ATMs take foreign cards. I have never heard of Solo, but I know that Cirrus, Plus, Visa, American express, Diner`s Club and Mastercard will be taken in these machines (and these machines only).
Ditto Tokyo Mommy
No, you can't. Japanese cash machines do not accept foreign cards. The only bank that you can use is Citibank, and their ATM's are not that common. ATM's are only open at certain times and you have to pay a fee to use them. I do not recommend relying on ATM's. As for travellers cheques, forget it. Japan is a CASH society. Just take plenty of cash with you and a credit card (VISA is best) for emergencies and to use in places that DO accept them (large hotels and department stores mostly). Credit cards are not accepted everywhere. Use cash.
I strongly suggest you do your homework before travelling to Japan.
