Can I use my Verizon Cell Phone in Japan?

Travel Info
I'm traveling to Japan for a month.I would like to know my options?

Travel Tips
Unless you have the type of phone calibrated for international networks, an American cell phone will not work in Japan, as they will work on completely different frequencies. Verizon does offer international phone services and phones for purchase, but these are extremely expensive and are typically used by those with business interests in Japan and travel there frequesntly. These services can run several hundred dollars per month.

Verizon does make available international phones for rental, but again this is an expensive service to provide. I looked in to seeing about renting a phone from Verizon before my trip to Japan and simply found it be be too expensive. After looking online, I found several companies in Japan that offer relatively inexpensive cell phone rental, with a flat fee paid per day for rental of the phone (kit comes with a case for the phone and a charger), as well as access to make both local and international calls. My total bill, after three weeks of traveling Japan ended up being around $250 total, which was a bit pricey but it gave my family a lot of peace of mind that they could reach me when needed. I thought that it had been well worth the money.

Only if it is a world phone and you have deep pockets.

Verizon's roaming is GSM/CDMA only. There is no GSM in Japan, and the CDMA frequencies are different from those used in North America.

Your options seem to be limited to rental, either through Verizon or another carrier.

Rules regarding prepaid cell service in Japan were changed a few years ago, and you have to be a legal resident of Japan and show ID to buy prepaid service.
Nope...American cells won't work there. Best bet is to buy prepaid long distance cards and call from land lines. If you have to have a cell, contact American Express or Triple A and ask about where and how to rent a phone with international capabilities. Be prepared...it will be costly and the minutes will be exspensive as well.
