What is a good area to stay in Tokyo? Ginza, Poppongi, Asakusa, Shinjuku..? What are some must-do's in Tokyo? |
Travel Info Safety and location are both very important. I am a young woman travelling alone. I'd like to stay at a hotel, budget of around $120/night. What are some must-do's in Tokyo in addition to the temples? Kabuki theater, massage, any hot springs, gardens, tea ceremonies...?? I only have 3 days in Tokyo. Travel Tips Hi! I just got back from Japan, and I only stayed in Tokyo for four days. There's a lot to see, and I wish I had more time, but such is life! On a whole Japan is very safe, but don't get sloppily incautious. For hotels, I cannot recommend any specific ones in that price range, but I can advise you what areas to stay in. Any hotel within easy walking distance of a JR train station is preferable (don't worry about the subway; they're everywhere). Near Tokyo station would be best, because it's basically in the center of Tokyo, but hotels near Shinjuku, Shibuya, Shinagawa, or any other JR rail station with metro connections on site are great, too. However, if you really like to stay out late at night, partying and whatnot, a hotel in Roppongi would be excellent, since it is the center of nightlife in Tokyo. I advise this because the subway stops operating at 11pm, but you needn't be worried. The cabs still operate into the wee hours of the morning, so you won't be stranded or anything! If you only have three days, you should plan ahead. Look at all the places that are near each other, so you can hit them in the same day. That saves a lot of travel time. Also, very VERY important: Bring good walking shoes. You can add hours onto your day if your feet don't hurt (I learned this the hard way when I wore my converse the entire first day). This is basically what I did. I got in most major sights and had a lot of fun. It worked out well, so I suggest you do something along these lines. Oh, and get good detailed maps for each area you go to. 1- Shibuya, Harajuku, and Shinjuku areas: This is in southeast Tokyo. You shouldn't miss Meiji-Jingu gardens in Iris season. Harajuku is a must see, for crazy fashions and fun shopping, but don't go earlier than 11 am or there will hardly be anyone there. If you want a cheapish one stop shop for souvenirs, go to the 'Oriental Bazaar'. Though I did not experience it, I heard that the 'Scramble Crossing' was a sight to behold. I would suggest you go to Shinjuku in the late afternoon and early evening. There's good shopping, restaurants, and bars. 2- Ueno: Ueno is in northern Tokyo. It's very beautiful. If you exit at Ueno station you find yourself in a park that is worth exploring. There are many museums there if you like that sort of thing. If the Russian exhibit is still at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum, you must go see it. I hate museums and even I liked that one. There is a five storied pagoda and a temple in the park that are pretty cool. If you go to the southern end of Ueno station there are three alleys across the street with lots of shops. This is Ameyoko. Ameyoko was the location of the black market, post WWII, where the Japanese could buy things illegally imported from America. You must go there, there are so many shops and most stuff is very cheap. There are also a lot of inexpensive restaurants which I suggest you check out if you're on a budget. If you have time, check out Akibahara (2 stations south on the JR line) for massive amounts of electronics at reasonable prices. 3- Central Tokyo: You can't actually go in the Imperial Palace, but you can go in some of the gardens. They are pretty, especially when the flowers are blooming. From there head south to Hibiya where you can find lots of food stands under the train tracks. Then head to Ginza for shopping (mostly upscale, but in back alleys and smaller shops you can find reasonable prices). You should definitely go in and experience a Japanese department store; they鈥檙e pretty awesome. In the evening and late afternoon, go to Roppongi for shopping and then nightly entertainment. There are TONS of restaurants and fun places to go there. Well yup, that's it. The five things you HAVE to do are... 1- Meiji-Jingu Park and Temple 2- Roppongi at night 3- Ueno and Ameyoko 4- A department store 5- Harajuku Tokyo is a really cool city; I hope you have fun. Sorry for making this so long =) P.s. Don鈥檛 blow your nose in public. Carry a handkerchief around, because most bathrooms don鈥檛 have paper towels. Be prepared for squat toilets in some train stations. Last but not least, the food is good everywhere. I never had a meal that wasn鈥檛 fresh and tasty! One more thing! In Roppongi there is a club called 'Abbey Road' where the 'Parrots' play. They are the Japanese 'Beatles' imitators who won the world competition in Liverpool last year. THEY'RE REALLY GOOD. It's super funny when they sing in perfect english, sounding exactly like the Beatles, then bust out in Japanese afterwards. It's a bar, but they never card. It's just an odd little thing that was really fun. Source(s): ME!!! Other Travel Tips You named some good areas. Don't forget Shibuya too. A good hotel chain is called the Prince hotel chain. There are a few around Tokyo, including one near Shinagawa Sta. It is a nice area. Tokyo Tower is nice. The Imperial Palace is nice. Shopping in Shibuya. The nightlife is also fun there! http://www.tourism.metro.tokyo.jp/englis... Hotels in Tokyo are quite expensive, especially in those locations you mentioned. But you could get nice hotel such as this one: http://www.villa-fontaine.co.jp/eng/shio... Or you do google before decide. I suggest you avoid staying or walking at night around Kabukichou area. Not so safe. Besides temples, you could go to Odaiba, Disneyland (if you like it), Shinjuku Park, Harajuku, or Tokyo dome hot springs. If you could reserve a whole day off, I suggest you go to Hakone.
