Overall, Kiyomizu Dera.

And it's not just for architectural reasons, although that obviously is a big part. If overhangs a cliff!

The aura of that place is amazing. It's best to go there knowing Japanese or at least with someone who does. You may miss some things otherwise.

I like all the playing with perception. There's a little shrine at the side of the temple where you can make a wish, then try to walk without opening your eyes to one rock to another. If you make it, you will realize your dream. There's another part where you make a wish, then try to pick up an object. If it was lighter than you thought, you will realize your dream. And there's the basement of the temple which is pitch black. You follow a rope around with your hands until you get to a secret stone which is lighted up.

It's just an incredible place. I like the old market street that runs from the temple down the hill too.

Kinkakuji and Ginkakuji are also quite amazing. As are several other places! It's too hard!

There's also an incredible shrine to the south with tons and tons of red torii (gates) going up a hillside.

Kinkakuji and the Golden Pavillion, just because of the spectacular colour and how perfectly uniform its shape appears. Did I mention its GOLD! Simply stunning...
That big one on top of the hill in Kyoto, I dont know what it is called but it is great. It need a moderatly fit person to walk all the way up the hill and along the way up there are lots of shops and oce you get to the temple there are lots of gardens and there is a spectacular view of Kyoto from the temple, surly one of my highlights when I went to Kyoto was this temple!

Very nice
The one on top of the hill... Kiyomizudera - stunning! Great architecture. Other notables the Pagoda at Toji, the use of the central pillar is incredible.
The Gate at Chion-in largest Gate in Japan, great example of Japanese classical archetecture.

The other great thing about these three national treasures is that they within walking distance of each other.
Shrine south of Kyoto with lots of gates. That would probably be in Fushimi.

I have to agree that Kinkakuji is the most stunning temple in Kyoto because of the fact that it is painted in gold. It is definately one of the most popular sites in Kyoto.
