I really want to visit Japan..?

Travel Info
But I'm only 15, and my parents have no interest in going with me. I've heard of foriegn exchange student programs, but are they only during school, or do they have some in the summer?

Also, can a minor go visit Japan by themselves without a guardian? I'm the only one in my family who can speak some japanese, so thats the main reason my parents won't go. Plus i've heard it's really expensive to visit

Any advice is appreciated! Thanks :)
(Oh, and im in the US btw)

Travel Tips
i suggest doing foreign exchange programs. some of them aren't that long. i really want to go to japan too. japan is pretty safe. like you can pretty much wander around without the fear of being mugged or something. it IS expensive though. very expensive. i don't suggest going a lone with only a little japanese knowledge. even if your family doesnt know any, it's always good to have adults you trust around.
also, i suggest trying to go with a friend who might go to japan. i was gonna go to korea with my friend this summer, but his grandparents go sick and i couldnt go.

You can do a highschool exchange through your school, but it will take alot of work on your own part contacting Exchange companies that will do the work setting up a programme for you.

In the end it will be worth it!
I did it and it changed my life!
i wanted to visit japan ever since i was 13. i had a chance through my school when i was 14 but my mother resisted the idea. i didn't get to go.

when i was 15, my school had another exchange student program. this time was to hokkaido and the plan was to go during winter.

however, my school decided not to have this exchange program because it was too expensive and some parents were not willing to pay.

at 18 (i've graduated from school already), i started working and earning my own money. i earned my money to visit japan on my own. i paid everything on my own. i was quite lucky because i have a few japanese friends and one of them put me up in her house. i saved on accomodations.

i don't know of any exchange student programs but if you were to go alone, it would be tough on you because you would have to pay for your airfare, accomodations and expenses over there.

i bought my ticket from northwest, they were having a promotion then, paid about 300usd. i spent about 700usd on food and stuffs like cds, clothes etc i bought there...

just sharing my experience because i have been there, i understand how you feel.
I wish I had the idea when I was that age to try and do one of the exchange programs so I could visit there myself, but I wasn't that interested in Japan back then. I finally got the money together and the time and went last year in November/December, and I had an absolute blast.

If you can't get the Exchange program to work for you, get a part time job, and start saving, apply for a passport (as long as its taking nowadays, you might even have the passport by the time you are 18), since you need one to leave the country no matter what. and when you reach 18 you should have enough money saved up to go on your own.

You don't need to speak Japanese to have a great trip, if you stick to Tokyo and its environs, you really don't need Japanese to get around or do anything (tho it does help a bit), almost all signs for train stations, restaurants, street signs and the like are written in english underneath.
A minor could go but with the parent/guardian's permission.I think that its better to go with your parents. Try asking them again
Thank you for liking Japan. Probably it is very difficult your parents to move to Japan. Japan don't take immigrant policy like the US. And mosts hotel won't let such young girl stay alone. I am not sure about hostels though.

Please study Japanese harder and come to Japan as a university student. After the uni, you will be able to make your future by yourself.
God bless you.
