Is it really dangerous to eat blowfish (Fugu) in Tokyo if you go to the right place? |
Travel Info A place I read about in the fish market, called Tentake, sounds like the real deal. I read an article in the Washington Post last year about it and the guy who wrote it said it was great, and that they don't mess around. It sounds pretty safe, and I know the main deaths come from people who don't know what they're doing trying to prepare it. Any advice? Travel Tips You are more likely to die; on the flight over, in the taxi to your hotel, in the walk to Roppongi, being mugged in Roppongi, from a heartattack after getting a rub-in-tug by a "new-half" than from eating blowfish. Dont be such a baby, and eat the fish already. jeez, this coming from the guy ready to hit up the dirtiest places in Roppongi, come on man! Others Go with the recommended place. Bring at least 10,000 yen per person. "Is it really dangerous to eat blowfish (Fugu) in Tokyo if you go to the right place?" Actually it's really dangerous if you go to the WRONG place. I lived in Japan for 3 years and NEVER got sick from food. The Japanese take cleanliness very seriously. Don't worry about it. The chefs that prepare fugu are VERY highly trained, and you're far more likely to die, as the poster above me said, in Roppongi. The truth is some fugu poisoning victims deliberately eat the bad parts as a thrill seeking thing. It's possible to "chase the dragon" and live-they just eat enough to get tingles. Sometimes they miscalculate and give fugu a bad name. |
