Can I use my debit mastercard in Japan? |
Travel Info I'd rather not carry a bunch of traveller's checks or cash while I'm in Japan. I'll be there for a month. I'm just wondering if my credit card will work over there? Of course I'd bring some cash, I'd be crazy not to, but I don't want to carry around my whole budget for the trip in my pocket! Travel Tips credit card will work in japan. visa, master, amex, jcb are the lost useful cards. you can use amex wherever has sign of jcb which is the biggest credit card company in japan. if you were thinking of withdrawing money from ATM, if your card have cirus or plus mark, it will work out for sure in everywhere. check the bank card if it has the mark and you can apply too if it didn't. the withdrawing cost is really cheap compared to other way of bringing money such as exchanging chash. travellers cheque is pretty good way too but you gotta go to bank every time to change it to cash. shops or restaurants almost never accept travellers cheques except for travellers place. have a great trip my friend! Source(s): im japanese and have lived in north america, and some european countries. Other Travel Tips Credit cards will work fine. I'm not sure about the debit card, but I used mine in Italy and had no problems there. no. money has got to be exchanged before you go over there. Yes. You might want to let your bank know that you will be using the card in another country as their security measures may send up a flag and turn off the card. Credit/debit and ATM are the only way to go. Have fun Check with your bank..they can tell you if you can use the card in Japan as well as what ATM's you can use to get cash. Cash is a must as most small businesses and resteraunts do not take any form of credit card and Visa is the one accepted more often than Mastercard. All in all, traveler's checks are your best bet...if you loose them, there are offices in every country, they are "insured" and will be replaced within 24 hours. If you loose your card, it is going to be tough to get a new one while overseas and that could leave you stuck! After reading this board I was surprised by how many places did accept mastercard when I was in Japan. Most larger purchases (hotel, restaurants, etc.) can now be made with mastercard in Japan. |
