A long time ago, Japan absorbed a lot of Chinese culture, one was the Chinese characters known as Kanji (like a Chinese alphabet), sword making, tofu etc. Then when Kyoto was the Capital of Japan, everything became 'Japanized' and the two countries took on very different personalities.
The race is mongoloid, but culture, language and thinking is completely different.

2 VERY different countries
Japan is a democracy with a capitalistic system of economy, while China is a communist nation.

Japan is homogenous while China contains many different native ethnic groups such as the Han(the majority ethnic group) Mongols, Manchus, Tibetans, etc.

The Japanese language is a polysyllabic, monotonal language...same as English, Hindi, and Korean. While the Chinese languages (or dialects) are monosyllabic, polytonal...same as Thai.

China allows only one child per couple while the Japanese government is paying couples to have more children since the Japanese population is dropping dangerously low.

Japan is an island country that relies a large portion of its food source from the sea while China's diet is more land based.

Japan does not censor the internet like China does.

The Chinese believed that when famines, wars, or other natural or mandmade disasters occured it was a sign from the heavans that the emperor lost the mandate from the heavens and could be overthrown. The Japanese thought that the Japanese emperor was the descendant of Amateratsu the sun goddess and he was divine and could not be overthrown.
