What does trow the baby out with bathwater mean? |

It means "in getting rid of waste, don鈥檛 also discard what is worth keeping." This phrase made its first appearance in Thomas Murner's Narrenbeschw枚rung which had as its 81st chapter "Das kindt mit dem bad v脽 schitten" (To throw the baby out with the bath water). This was a treatise on fools who try to get rid of something useless and get rid of something good. The phrase is repeated three times and there is an illustration. Murner was fond of the phrase he coined and used it often in later works. It was later adopted from German to English. I have attached some sources for your reference. Other Travel Tips It comes from the middle ages when they only had a bath once a week, First came the husband, in the same water the wife, then the children and last the baby, by then the water was so filthy that they said, watch it, don't throw the baby out with bath water. Now it just refers to: Think before you act It means don't throw out the valuable stuff with the garbage. Don't mix them up. Simple, the whole reson for the bath was the baby. To "throw the baby out with the bath water" is basicaly defeating the original purpose of a task. me Way back when a family would fill a tub with water to bathe. The father, or man of the house, would bathe first and second would be the wife, followed by the kids. The baby would be the last to bathe and then they would throw out the water. So, they had to be careful not to throw out the baby as well. |
