Kansas City MO. Do you like living there? What are good/bad areas. Decent wages? Diversity? Jobs? |
Travel Info Thinking of relocating there next spring. GWM 49 - GWM 48 Travel Tips http://www.kcmo.org/kcmo.nsf/web/home?op... http://www.visitkc.com/ http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity... Hope these sites help. Others I no longer live there but thought it the most God awful place on the planet. 10 below in the winter, 113 in the summer, flat and barren, yuck.... The only plus was the river boats. ;) I like it here. I live in the inner city and love it. But for anyone new and still staying here I would say that the Plaza/Westport area is the best if you want some type of luxury but still in the city if city living is your thing. If by diverse you mean a mix of cultures then it is. And I'm sure that you will be able to find a job here H&R Block, Sprint, Applebee's, etc. all have corporate offices here. Hopes this helps. KCMO... I live north of KC and wouldn't ever consider actually living inside the city limits. Thier school system is horid... they got their accredidation yanked by the state 2 years ago. Their taxes are ridiculous and the corporate offices located here are always... always either laying off or stopping production... Sprint is the worst. Most of the cities on the outlying skirts of KC are fairly decent with more job opportunities than KC. Overland park, KS is a technical and medical area with lots of job opportunities... It's a bit upscale and snooty, but nontheless... nice. Well that's silly, Sprint is located in Overland Park, not downtown. And they have their fair share of layoffs just like any other American company, but they haven't had the massive layoffs many auto companies have had. KC is definitely on the rise. It has invested millions of dollars downtown and if you want to get your foot in the door in a loft, I'd advise doing so soon. They plan to open a huge entertainment district/multipurpose arena next year. And everywhere you look downtown and in the Plaza/Westport area there is construction on more residential buildings. I'd also recommend the Plaza or Westport if you're young and want a condo/loft/apartment. You'll find the Plaza to be quite expensive. If you're looking for a house, I highly recommend Brookside and Waldo. They have some nice older homes in very safe, pedestrian friendly neighborhoods. Some homes are quite pricey, but you should be able to find some homes around $150,000-$200,000. Some other more diverse neigborhoods are Columbus Park near the River Market, Hyde Park, 39th and State Line near KU Med and Volker. Its true the KCMO school district suffers from the safe maladies most urban school districts suffer from. You're probably fine sending kids to elementary school if you're in a good neighborhood, but most affluent families send their kids to private high schools. If you really want to live in a good school district and live close to the city, I highly recommend living in northeast Johnson County - Fairway, Mission, Roeland Park, Shawnee. There are some cool old neighborhoods, you're very close to the Plaza/Westport area and the Shawnee Mission school district is top notch. I don't know about wages, but the cost of living here is insanely cheap. I moved here from DC and it was and my monthly mortgage is as much as my monthly rent for a one bedroom apartment in DC. If you want diversity, stay close to the city. Johnson County is largely lilly-white. Kansas City, Kansas has a very vibrant Hispanic community. As far as good areas, I like spending time at the Plaza, Westport, the River Market, the Crossroads, and Village West in KC, Kansas. People generally feel that east of Troost are the "bad areas" of KC. Hope you end up in KC! You'll find it has much to offer.
