What do airlines do with the flights that leave in the next 12 hours and there are seats that haven't sold yet |
Travel Info looking for spur of the moment short trip with son from KC to anyware there are seats still available on a flight that departs that same day that havnt sold yet. Do airlines drop the price drastic in order to fill the seat with someone as apossed to it remaining vacant and them receive nothing for it? Travel Tips I work for Northwest Airlines, and after 20 years in this business its truly hard to predict unsold seats...however, expedia and orbitz seem to be filling them up and with delays from other carriers, seats get filled...basically the seats are sold to capacity...whats not predicted is the size of the aircraft...with reconfigurations, a 757 can go from 155 to 175 seats with crew,...so in lies the difficulty with delays and mechanicals. My Best to you. Others they might. Isnt that what priceline.com is? there's nothing they can do about the unsold seats.... basically they allocate seats to most ticketing agents and these agents are responsible for it....if in long runs they discovered that there were many unsold seats, they will probably do less flights to accommodate all passengers into 1 plane ...it's most cost effective this way. yes,,,, last minute flying is a chance you take,,, (waiting to see if it doesnt book full) but they will sell the seat very cheap just to fill it. sort of like stand-by flying,,,, pay a very cheap price, and you may or may not get on the flight, depending on if it fills up or not,,,, but you will be garanteed a seat on the next flight (usualy) Sometimes they do lower the prices. Makes good business sense to get less money than to get no money, The seats will be going there anyway, so why not try to fill them. If you have the time I'd keep calling the airline or, expedia or places like that every couple hours. Worth a few phone calls wouldn't you say? Good luck, I hope you get a cheap fare and enjoy your trip. most flights are over booked to compensate for people missing planes, and late cancelations. go on www.lastminute.com its pretty hit and miss but you might pick up a bargin Sometimes the price will drop, it is called space A travel like the military. You claim the open seat, only problem is that if you have a group all of you may not fly together |
