Check out Valley View Banks. There are several branches in Shawnee Mission alone (the Overland Park area and surrounding suburbs). Their main branch is on 95th street, but they're everywhere and have FABULOUS customer service.

You can not go wrong with Bank of America, I switched to them after being with Commerce for 12 years...for the very reasons you just stated.
Wells Fargo or Bank of the West
Commerce or UMB.
Some of my older siblings have Commerce and love it. My parents have UMB (along with siblings around my age and me) and we have never had a problem. When you are out of town (since UMB is only in the midwest) they will pay for the ATM fee's.

Mission State Bank part of network of local Banks all over the greater KC area. Each bank in the network show a symbol of a green leaf. Other banks in the network include Industrial State Bank in KCK, 1st Bank of Missouri in KCMO, Gladstone and St Joe. You can access your account and use your debit card at any bank that belongs to the green leaf group. Since they are all local they make feel like they want your business.
