Visa's to Kenya are for only 3 months. I want to go for long term. What do others who go for long term do?

I have inquired about a missionary visa, but Kenya does not have them. They suggested a tourist visa, and to work with immigration to extend the visa. Is there a way to stay there without having to worry about renewing the visa every three months?
