Mombasa is a city on the east coast of africa, in kenya. i was there at christmas. it's over a thousand years old and has an amazing history of arabs, portuguese, english, africans all fighting for domination. it used to be part of the same swahili empire as zanzibar until it was given to kenya by zanzibar at kenya's independence from britain. it's a tough port city now, quite crazy, almost modern-day pirate town. the old town is beautifully arabic and the new town is colourfully african. the sea is very beautiful, on the indian ocean, but most of the coastline is taken up by resorts.
