Why do koreans always have a peace sign when they take a picture? |
Travel Info it's kinda cute though... Travel Tips All Asians do it and its debatable why. There are two schools of thought on this. 1) The ubiquitous use of the "peace" sign in pictures has become as common as smiling because Koreans are inherently insecure about themselves. Its the herd mentality. Thats what you HAVE to do or the Picture Police will make everybody laugh at you. i.e. "Look at that!!! Ji Young didn't do the peace sign!!! Did she fail picture taking class or what?? bwa hahaha" 2) Its not the peace sign but the chopsticks sign. Koreans are notoriously insecure and are demonstrating in pictures that "We have friends and are going to eat soon!". The miracle on the Han river has seem the GDP per capita of South Korea go from 100 to almost 20,000. Unheard of but it was accomplished in one generation. Many Koreans still retain the fear of poverty and the memory of looking on at society's elite alwyas eating with chopsticks in hand. The "Peace" sign is actually the "Chopsticks" sign. I have money, I'm going to eat soon too. Source(s): The Peace Sign: The Study of Koreans and their Peace sign by Audrey Kim, Bantom Publishing 2004 Koreans and their Chopsticks sign, Holistics Publishing 2007 Dumb and Dumber: How to Take Pictures with Koreans, Penguin Classics Publishing 2001 Other Travel Tips I think not all but maybe somehow its thier signature sign.....or just a cute pose..... I know this probably isn't what you want to hear, but the truth is: nobody knows how the peace sign became so popular in Asia. The Japanese also give the peace sign very often in pictures. If you ask Koreans or Japanese why they do it, they don't know. Some people will say that "it's something to do with your hands", but the origins are unknown. LOL! I always wonder that too! It's funny! But I see a lot of people doing that now, especially young people. It's not just Koreans, it's Japanese, Taiwanese, and most other Asians... it's an Asian thing! :p If you looked at the Japanese, they had always show the peace sign when they take pictures, aka the hippie style of the 60s. And other eastern countries follwed Japan. Next you see the Taiwanese doing it for their photos, and now, just about any countries in the region, you will see the peace sign. Have you notice that even the Chinese athletes also flash the peace sign when their pictures are being taken? |
