What program would you recommend for learning korean... or even a website? Preferably free....lol? |
Travel Info I'm in the airforce, and found out that for my first station i'll be stationed in south korea. Please help me...lol Travel Tips I rather like Rosettastone's online Korean program. They set it up in a way that makes the vocabulary easy to remember. Other than that, I learned it (intermediate level) by simply getting out there and using Korean whenever the chance came up. Being on a military base might limit you a little, though. In my case, I simply moved there and dove into the culture head first. ^^ Good luck. It's one heck of a tough language to learn. Others There is a short show on a channel called Arirang here called Let's Speak Korean. Very short quick little vocabulary lessons. Depending on where you are in the country and how long you will be here it may not be all that important to learn more than the basics anyways. Maybe one of these will be helpful: http://www.mct.go.kr/hangeul/ http://www.langintro.com/kintro/index.ht... http://www.lifeinkorea.com/language/kore... http://english.tour2korea.com/02culture/... Check you local base education center., they should have the Korean headstart program available for checkout. It's a workbook and 13 tapes. The program was developed by The Defense Language Institute, Foreign Language Center. Another good program is Barron's Mastering Korean. It was developed by the Foreign Service Institute and is the course used by the U.S. Government to train Diplomatic Personnel. It consists of a workbook and 12 tapes. You will find many English to Korean programs available on CD, You can also use Korean to English programs for reverse learning. For online courses just search "Korean Language". That will give you a lot of sources. Also, check the foreign language book section at your PX. Best of luck to you here in Korea you can make it the experience of a life time. I should have added that once you get here check out the personal ad sections in the Korean Times and Korean Herald newspapers. There are a lot of Koreans looking for language exchange and also, conversation groups. It's a great way to not only learn Korean but also make new friends over here. Friends here will make your tour much more interesting and enjoyable. Also, the Community Service Center will have language courses for free. I see them advertised on AFN TV a lot. If you want to learn to read and write, this website has been helpful for me : http://langintro.com/kintro/ Other, youtube has some videos that might help. This user has a bunch of "let's learn Korean" videos that I haven't checked out yet. Hope they help : http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=xd3q... good luck :) There are many useful tools that I've come across in learning Korean, but as someone who's learned the language on my own, I have to say I wish I had found this website as soon as I arrived in country: http://www.learnkoreanlanguage.com/learn... The first thing you need to do is learn hangul, with is the writing. It is actually fairly simple and takes about two weeks to become pretty familiar with it. Then it has actual grammar lessons, which are 100X more useful than just learning phrases. After generally learning whats on that I also recommend the arrirang TV show lets learn korean. You can find just about every episode on youtube.com. This show will help your vocab and also advance your grammar skills so you can express yourself more completely. I'm only on episode 30 something, but already I've learned more korean through a combination of those than I did spanish in 4 years of high school instruction.(I've been learning for about 8 months) Also having Korean friends to practice with will help a lot. There are some subtleties to the language and not everything translates directly. I also recommend watching some Korean TV shows with subtitles to help your listening skill. If you have access to skillport then Rosetta Stone can also help with this. |
