Are there USA Base's in south korea? |
Travel Info Are there USA Base's in south korea? Travel Tips Yes, we have several army and air force bases as well as one navy administrative base in South Korea. The U.S. military divides the county into four operating areas. Area I is the area north of Seoul and covers up to the DMZ (demilitarized zone) and the major base is Camp Casey. Area II is the area surrounding Seoul and is centered on Yongsan Garrison, the major base in Korea. Yongsan is the headquarters of the 8th U.S. Army, U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) and the United Nations Command. The base at Yongsan was formerly a Japanese Military Base built during their occupation of Korea. Area III is south of Seoul and is headquartered at Camp Humphreys. The U.S. is the process of moving its forces south from the DMZ and Yongsan to Humphreys. All moves are now scheduled to be completed by 2011. Area IV is the area farthest south and includes the area surrounding Pusan, the major seaport of South Korea. The U.S. Air Force has major bases at Osan and Kunsan. The primary U.S. Navy Commander in Korea is Commander Naval Forces Korea and he is headquartered at Yongsan. A small Naval Adminstrative Command is located at Chinhae in the south near Pusan. The Korean Naval Academy is also located there. The staff of Commander Marine Forces Korea is also headquartered at Yongsan. There are several other small U.S. Army Bases throughout Korea, however, many are being consolidated or closed as part of the move away from the DMZ and Seoul. The senior U.S. military officer in Korea is General Bell, U.S. Army. Commander U.S. Forces Korea (USFK). He is a Four Star General and all forces - Army, Navy, Marine and Air Force fall under him. Sadly, younger Koreans have forgotten or never learned the lessons of the Korean War. The U.S. has been South Korea's staunchest friend for more sixty years. When North Korea invaded the South the Korean Army was almost destroyed and American Forces faced the brunt on the attack and staved off defeat. American casualties numbered more than 30,000. Without the efforts of American forces South Korea would, today, be living in the same backward third world conditions that the North lives under today. But all of that is a lesson for another time. Hope that this helps and gives you a good idea of American Forces in Korea. Source(s): Formerly served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Administration, U.S. Naval Forces Korea. Now retired and working as a contractor for the U.S. Army on Yongsan Garrison. Other Travel Tips We helped them in the Korean War, i'm sure we have a base there. (america has bases everywhere)..well except for N.Korea. I know of at least three. There are two Air Force bases (don't know the names or the exact locations, other than that they are in S. Korea). There is also an Army base in Seoul, if I remember correctly. friend who did a tour for the USAF in S. Korea, uncle who served in the Army in Seoul Yes. And they living like a pig in a pigsty. They dump toxic sewage in these base which is not theirs AND they do not care cuz it is not USA's. And they will not even restore it at all when they move. What a wonderful ppl! Korean don't like Americans. At least one here. ME! |
