Are South Korean people living in Seoul afraid of an invasion from the North? |
Travel Info I mean like Seoul is only less than 30km away from the DMZ!!! Travel Tips Generally South Koreans do not think about the possible impending doom upon them less then 45 KM away from the border. As for people who think the U.S. will be right there to help, let me give you a few figures. North Korea has 1.2 million active soldiers. 800,000 of them are currently guarding the DMZ. South Korea has 650,000 active soldiers. (Most of them only doing their mandatory service) 350,000 of those soldiers are at the DMZ. The U.S. has a measly 24,000 U.S. soldiers stationed between the border and the southern coast. (The U.S. is currently reshuffling the military presence in South Korea, taking out 2,000 soldiers per year for support in the Iraq conflict) There are only 4,000 U.S. soldiers posted around the DMZ area. It would take about 1 hr for North Korea to hit Seoul upon a surprise attack. Noting these I facts. I often wonder what the people here think. I have lived here for a long time, and I teach English to businessmen and college students. When I ask them questions like; "How many soldiers do you think North Korea has?" Or visa-versa, most of them give me some number totally off the mark. I find there naive innocence quite amazing. The leader of North Korea...Kim Jong Il, is not suicidal. He's all about survival so the chances of North Korea invading the South unprovoked are 1 in a million. Most of South Koreans consider North Korea part of their family, culture, and history. So they never really consider an invasion part of daily life. 19.5 million people live in Seoul. Go figure. Source(s): Lived in Korea for 8 years Used to be a U.S. Marine stationed in Camp Casey Dong du Chon Other Travel Tips If North Korea does attack South Korea, it won't be an invasion. South Korea would be able to stop a North Korean invasion (the U.S. and many nations would help). If they attack, it will be a nuclear bomb. There are many Koreans (and Japanese) who are nervous about North Korea. Of Course, wouldn't you be? It would probably start WW3. If not it would involve all of the Asia, UK, Australia, NZ, Canada, and the US. Maybe more countries than that. Let's hope it doesn't happen. Cheers. After 50 years of it not happening, most of the generation that didn't live through the war doesn't think it will happen. A lot of them actually think that Kim Jong Il is good man with their best interests at heart. And how would it start world war three? Who would fight for the North Koreans this time? KJI won't do anything that will jeopardize his regime and invading would pretty much force the US to do so. |
