Do they still have 'wedding chest parties' in Korea the night before a wedding? |
Travel Info I've read that in Korea, the night before a wedding, a fake battle is staged between the friends of the bride and groom. The groom's friends visit the bride's house carrying a wedding chest full of things to do with the wedding and the bride's friends must try and steal the chest. Is this true? Does such a custom still continue? Does anyone have any more details? Travel Tips This is quite rare these days. I didn't do it. Others yes of course it does Oh I saw it several times. The chest has important documents for wedding, like document requesting the marriage, groom's date of birth (which was pretty private information in old time Korea - people believed date of birth & time of birth reveals the future of a person), and some gift (appreciating that the family allowed the wedding). Since all people bring the chest were men, you can imagine they make the process fun... by teasing the people receive the chest :-) It's not a fist-fight by the way, it's real funny "dealing" rather. Groom's friend say something like "Wow, this chest is too heavy, I'm so exausted!!" and sit down. Then bride's aunt come and "Have some drink, here, but if you want to drink step 10 feet forward~" Then Groom's friend says like "Drink is so little, 2 feet is enough!" "Hey, make it 3 feet, I'll pay you $10." Something ongoing like this. It was a village's entertainment back in old Korea, but looks so unlogical, isn't it? So more and more young people don't want to follow this customs anymore, but the tradition didn't die out yet. You have been given some good answers. The fact is, this is rare in Korea today. The rapid movement to first world status and desire for wealth has made many old traditions die out. You might find this in some rural villages, where a wedding is a real event. Other traditions, such as throwing the baby's placenta on the roof to announce its birth went away a long time ago. Still, these old customs are interesting. |
