Travel Info Is it safe to drink water from the tap in seoul, s korea? Travel Tips I've worked in the waterworks office in Seoul. It is safe to drink water from the tap in seoul. But if you living in a old apartment or house you should consider to drink it. Waterworks office start changing their old undergorund pipe to rustproof metal pipe. As I know it has changed more than 70% of entire country. But even you have new rustproof pipe above your house if your house is too old with old rusted pipe... it can't be that clean. My parents house has clean new pipe in Seoul they still have a water purifier at home. They just want the best. lol By now, most of Koreans buy their drinking water from supermarke or delivery water from a water company, or have a water purifier at home. And as other ppl say you can get a 500ml water bottle for 5~6cents(US) and also you can get 1000ml water for around 1dollar(US). Any supermarket they have water. My answer is YES but nobody drink water from the tap anymore. Source(s): I am a Korean. To Rick: If you were a engineer for monitoring drinking water quality for US military , can you ask them not to thraw toxic sewage in Korea? Other Travel Tips The water in Seoul meets requirements of the World Health Organization and Korean National Standards AT THE TREATMENT PLANT, unfortunately, much of the underground piping in Seoul is old and some is in poor repair, so it is hard to be sure the water is potable - it depends on what part of town. I would recommend that you NOT drink the tap water. That being said, as long as there is a chlorine residual, it should be OK - you would have to test the water to see (using a color comparitor kit). I'm an engineer who was responsible for monitoring drinking water quality for US military in Korea in the past. I am now an ex-pat in China who travels to Korea (Seoul) frequently. It is NOT RECOMMENDED. With the water purification percentage vs. the number of people needing clean water for drinking, the percentages are against you that the water will be clean for drinking. Also, learn from last summer's example: The water source was contaminated but the government didn't get the word out until residents had been drinking the water for 3 days! Water is cheap to buy here: 7-11 bottle is about 50 cents (USD) and I get my family jugs delivered for $5 a piece. (takes us through a week or so) It is not recommended. Boil water from the tap, or buy bottled water. |
