What are the current problems concerning North and South Korea? |

Travel Tips I live here adn here is the only REAL problem facing the 2 nations: When they eventually open that border, Seoul better be wealthy enough to absorb all those undernourished, poor people that will flood over. It will not be as easy as in Berlin. West ermany wa a very stable economy when the wall came down. As generous and friendly as South Koreans are now, there will be a real strain on relations when they reunite. North Kroeans are visibly, on average, smaller and more petite than South Koreans, due to a history of malnutrition ad over work. North Koreans will be visibly identifiable and prejudice will take place. Ask any North Korean that has been able to make it down here so far. I doubt Seoul could handle the influx at this point. There are many obstacles to overcome. Others If you are asking for problem between the two nations, there is the matter of two very different economic systems and democracy. The South is a booming economy with freedom; the North a controlled state-run economy with great poverty (with large military expenditures) and complete lack of freedom. If you are asking for internal problems: the South has an overly hot economy with inflation; the North is completely stagnated, needing food aid from the world (although less this year than last). To answer your question could take days and hundreds of pages, but the above is a good summary. I'm a Ph.D.-holding American ex-pat living in China, but travel to Korea often.
