Anyone familiar with the Independent Center for American Studies in Daegu, South Korea? |
Travel Info I am interviewing for a job there and may be asked to start relatively soon. Does anyone have any helpful information on this institution, or on Daegu as a city? Is it safe? Does it have good public transportation? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks. Travel Tips I love Daegu!! Lived there for six months and had one of the greatest times ever. Lots to do and see in the city, good day and night life. Lots of restaurants, arcades, tons to do. A huge part of the reason I loved it is because of the friends I had there but it can be done. Nearby mountains are great for hiking, Pusan is close by for a visit to the shore. It is pretty safe for a huge city- I never felt in danger. I am a girl and pretty sure I could beat up most Korean guys if it came down to it. You will get a lot of stares and such but nothing physically threatening. Transportation is pretty good once you get the bus system down- assuming you don't live in the center. Taxis are incredibly cheap and the subway is good if you live near the lines. Everything is pretty cheap and there is more than enough American food places if you start feeling like you need something familiar. All in all, it is my city of choice in Korea. Others http://english.daegu.go.kr/ Hope this site help you! Daegu is a big, great city.. I have some friends from there, it's a big city and people have somewhat I compare with "southern hospitality" At first site people can look unfriendly, but so many people are warm-hearted inside... It's famous for apples, you should try to taste all kinds of apple in fall. I also heard many non-Koreans live in Daegu recently?? Make a friend anyone speaks English! (That helps.. virtually anywhere in the world^^) I am not familiar with the center, but hopefully this link assists your information search - http://englisht.daegu.go.kr/business/biz... Yes, Daegu has a very efficient, and easy to understand, subway system. I live in seoul and have taken the KTX, (fast train), to Daegu for shopping and teaching trips many times. Daegu is a bit industrial and not as trendy or hip as Seoul, but there are beautiful hikes to be taken in the mountains and plenty of good shopping in the open markets. Daegu has an American military base, so you will see PLENTY of western faces. The restaurant choices are not nearly as expansive as in Seoul, but there are a few decent western ones. I would suggest you become familiar with Korean cuisine. Daegu, as well as all other Korean cities, is quite safe. You may walk home at night by yourself without worry. KTX travel is not as cheap as it should be in Korea, so you may want to invest in a car for weekend trips outside of Daegu. (There is not enough happening in Daegu to keep you interested for very long) The eastern seaside is quite near for summer enjoyment. (hope you like seafood) Have fun! |
